Here is a link to information about left-handedness.

Set up Dataset

  1. Import the GenderVsHanded dataset into SPSS.
  2. Set variable labels and value lables for the variable Gender and Handed. See the Codebook worksheet in the Excel file.

Chi-squared Test for Goodness-of-fit

  1. Use SPSS to generate a frequencies table showing the frequency of occurrence of right and left handedness for the dataset.
  2. *Conduct a chi-squared test to see if the random sample is representative of the national average, where are about 87% of the people are right-handed and 13% of the people are left-handed. Write out the 5 steps of the test of hypothesis. Compute the test statistic by hand to see if it agrees the value that SPSS produces.

Chi-squared Test for Independence

  1. Use SPSS to genderate a 2 × 2 contingency table showing the frequency of occurence of right-handed women, right-handed men, left-handed women, and left-handed men.
  2. *Conduct a chi-squared test to see if gender and handedness are independent. Write out the 5 steps of the test of hypothesis. Compute the test statistic by hand to see if it agrees the value that SPSS produces.
