Announcements
- Jan 27. Signup for the proctored final exam is posted. Find the signup on the right side of the D2L home page for IT 223.
- Jan 27. In case you are wondering how my trip to Nebraska is turning out, my mother passed away last Thursday; the funeral will be held this coming Thursday. I am more relieved than sad because she was not doing well. I fly back home on Saturday.
- Jan 26. Project 2a will not be counted late if submitted by Saturday, Jan 31.
- Jan 22. Problem 5 of Project 2a asks you to plot three different histograms of the dataset, one with the default bin boundaries and two histograms where you set the bin boundaries (break points) explicitly. In the discussion of Project 2a at the end of the Jan 21 Notes, an example has been added that shows how to specify break points, one using the c function and one using the seq function.
- Jan 21. As I told the class today, I will be flying to Nebraska tomorrow to see my mother who is in hospice care. There should be no problem with classes on Monday and Wednesday; I will be zooming in from there. Scheduling office hours might be more hectic; just email or text me as usual if you have questions or would like to schedule an appointment.
- Jan 21. The last question of Project 1a says: "Plot your dataset by observation number. Describe this plot using the terms unbiased, biased, homoschedastic, and heteroscedastic." It also asks you to discuss any lurking variables in your dataset if you can think of some." This question will be moved to Project 2bcd.
- Jan 21. The questions and answers are posted for Practice Quiz 1.
- Jan 18. Reminder: there is no IT 223 class tomorrow because it is Martin Luther King day. See you Wednesday, Jan 19.
- Jan 15. Two reminders:
- Project 1 is due today.
- Practice Quiz 1 is due on Sunday, Jan 18. Because there was a typo for Question 5, everyone will receive credit for that question. The typo is fixed in case you have any remaining attempts. (You are allowed three attempts for each practice quiz.) Quizzes cannot be taken late.
- Jan 10. Each quarter, the DePaul asks instructors to submit a list of no-shows for their courses. If you have synchronously attended at least one of the IT 223 class meetings, or submitted a study log for Week 1, you will not be reported as a no-show. However, if you have not attended any class meetings and have not submitted a study log for Week 1, please submit a document to this Attendance Verification drop box, stating that you wish to remain in the class. Please submit this document by noon, Tuesday, Jan 13.

- Jan 5. Practice quizzes count 10% of your course score. You can take each practice quiz up to 3 times. The highest score that you obtain will be used for your quiz score. A practice quiz will be posted on each Friday except midterm week. This quiz will be due 8 days later on Sunday night at 11:59 pm.
- Jan 5. The first quiz, Practice Quiz 1, will open by Friday, Jan . This quiz will be due on Sunday night, Jan 19.
- Jan 5. Attendance counts 10% of your grade. Students obtain credit for
attendance by attending Zoom class sessions. If you must miss a class,
obtain credit for attendance by submitting a study log for that week, which will
summarize what you did to study for IT 223 during that week. Although exactly what you submit is up to
you, here are some suggestions: the number of hours you spent studying for the various
parts of the class (e.g., watching lectures and studying class examples, working on
tutorials, projects, and practice quizzes), what did you find interesting, hard, or
confusing, what questions did you have? If you have questions for the instructor,
email him directly, in addition to putting these questions in the study log.
Study logs are due Tuesday, for the preceding week. They are subject to late penalties. Study logs should be about one third to one half of a page in length. - Jan 5. The official late penalty is 10% per day that a project is late. Projects will have a three day grade period before they are counted late. If you have extenuating circumstances, late penalties may be reduced if you talk to the professor, either by phone or via Zoom. Although it is possible for the late penalties to be reduced, they cannot be totally eliminated.
- Jan 5. The last day to drop this class with full tuition refund is Friday, Jan 16.
