F.A.Q.

This is a list of frequently asked questions we received during the years.  The answers are given by previous participants in the REU program:

1.                  If we are considering bringing a vehicle, is parking something we should handle on our own?

2.                  What students have done for meals in the past? Will food services be available on campus locations during the summer quarter?

3.                  Do I need to purchase a pass for public transportation before I arrive or will this be purchased for me?

4.                  Where do I need to go the first day?

5.                  There are two airports in Chicago:1) Chicago, IL (MDW-Midway); 2) Chicago, IL (ORD-O'Hare).To which one are we suppose to arrive?

6.                  What type of attire is required for the course of the program, or if anything else was required for the program that may not seem obvious?

Q: If we are considering bringing a vehicle, is parking something we should handle on our own?

A: I would advise against the vehicle. None of the dorm folks in '06 had one and I really don't feel that we missed out on anything. You can get most anywhere by bus or rail and it's not much trouble.

Q: What students have done for meals in the past? Will food services be available on campus locations during the summer quarter?

A: Here's what you do: the day you arrive, find the other MedIX folks in the dorm and hang out (or email them before and set up a time to meet for dinner or whatever). During the first week, find the Target (it's a bus ride away, can't remember the line, sorry) and buy a cheap set of cookware (or bring your own if you can). Then trade off the three tasks of buying groceries, cooking dinner, and cleaning up. It gives you all something to do in the evenings when you want to do something besides watch TV but are too exhausted to go downtown. It's a whole lot of fun. We had two guys and two girls in the dorm in '06 and this
is what we did. It worked out great--interestingly enough, I think I remember that we guys ended up cooking more often than the girls, but whatever works I guess.

Q: Do I need to purchase a pass for public transportation before I arrive or will this be purchased for me?

A: You will purchase the pass when you get here. You will keep the receipt and you will be reimbursed for the U-PASS.

Q: Where do I need to go the first day?

A: The first day you will come to DePaul, the CDM building at 243 South Wabash Avenue, Chicago, IL 60604

Q: There are two airports in Chicago:

1) Chicago, IL (MDW-Midway)

2) Chicago, IL (ORD-O'Hare)

To which one are we suppose to arrive?

A: You should plan to arrive at the O’Hare airport.  This airport is closer to the dorms in Lincoln Park (where you will be staying) and also to the DePaul campus.  There is the Blue Line train that will take you form O’Hare to the Lincoln Park Campus (about 45 minutes ride).

Q: What type of attire is required for the course of the program, or if anything else was required for the program that may not seem obvious?

A: The first week and during the midterm and final presentations you should wear business casual attire since we will have guests and take a lot of pictures.
